PYROS PASS THEIR WAY INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS!
Last Updated 02 Feb 2008
The UWS Pyros took the field on a cold, but still Sunday, on the 1st of February to take on the challenge of
League Rookies, the Northumbria Mustangs. Victory here would seal the Scottish Championship for the Pyros and
gaurantee home field advantage for their play-off match which a this point, looks like a meeting the UT Cougars, who also happen to be the
Pyros' next opponents.
The initial opening drives from both the Pyros and the Mustangs were slow off the mark, possibly a sign of post winter fatigue. However, if
the Pyros had the Mustangs under any illusions that they were rusty, the Mustangs soon awoke to reality when it was the pyros Defence that
opened the scoring off the back of a Mustang fumble in their own Endzone.
The Pyros have been renowned for the Defence this year and again proved how they can be so dangerous in the opponents redzone area.
The Pyros soon had another touchdown with a Ben Alkureshi throwing to Dave Pasnik for a 43 Yard score.
Having failed to convert any of their two touchdowns, the Pyros went into the break with a 12 - 0 lead.
The Pyros had been showing signs of rustiness from their winter break but that was about to change. Any hope that the Mustangs had
of coming back into the match quickly evaporated as soon as the second half kicked off.
The Mustangs kick was returned by Bud who ran it all the way back for a TD which was converted by Tal Peer to extend their lead to 20 - 0.
The Pyros then really turned the screw as they dominated the Mustangs on all fronts. With Ben throwing another TD to Kris Henderson and then running one in himself. The Pyros also scored again on defence as Kevin Gray recovered a fumble and returned it 28 yards for the score, giving him two defensive TDs on the day. The Pyros finished with a strong second half and ended the game victorious with a score of 48-0.
Having clinched the Division Championship and home-field advantage for the Play-offs, the Pyros now turn their attention to 2 weeks from now
when they take on the UT Cougars which looks like being a dry run the opening play-off week.
